When a Puzzle is Used to Produce Artworks...
Gerhard Mayer is an educated German multidisciplinary artist, with varied interests. In his sculptures, he investigates visible effects of quantum physics – his drawings are made using seven simple shapes – and his puzzle work is, well, puzzling. It’s in a very limited medium where he tries to break most boundaries. Puzzles are cut to specific shapes and fragments of an image on different pieces must come together in a specific way, and in exactly one correct place, to create a coherent overall image. These limiting factors seem to amuse Mr. Mayer greatly, as he bends the rules and creates puzzle images over 5 meters long and 2 meters tall. Using pieces from who knows how many different puzzle sets he mixes fur with foliage, flowers with fireworks, landscape with architecture – creating images of real artistic value from simple brain teasers. Although these must be very time-consuming to make, we can definetly feel the artists enjoyment of the process simply by looking at the finished image.
